CBNA Students Earning College Credits

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy has established a partnership with Southern New Hampshire University through SNHU in the High School, a dual enrollment program allowing high school students to have the opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school. Designated courses at CBNA have been aligned to meet the same content, rigor and learning outcomes as that of the University. The courses are taught by our high school teachers who have met SNHU adjunct faculty requirements and have been approved by the University. Presently, CBNA has four teachers, Walter Damon, Amy Usinger, Mark Struthers and David Zink-Mailloux, who are offering Calculus, Public Speaking, Creative Writing, Anatomy and Physiology, and Environmental Science through this program. More teachers and courses are in the approval process.

In addition, Dr. JoAnn Zylak has completed the BizInnovator Teacher Certification and is now able to offer juniors and seniors college credit for Entrepreneurship through the University of Iowa. BizInnovator is a comprehensive online entrepreneurship curriculum that enables educators to teach the entrepreneurial mindset, encouraging creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and problem solving in preparing students for success in their chosen career paths.

CBNA is also in the process of allowing students to earn dual credit for classes through Great Bay Community College.

The advantage for students participating in these classes is that they are able to earn early college credit at a savings of more than 90% off regular college tuition. They also experience the academic requirements of university level courses, and establish official college transcripts that can be recognized and accepted by many other colleges and universities.

Prep for balloon launch 2

CBNA science students prepare the payload for their recent successful balloon launch.

The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Science Club, working in conjunction with the University of New Hampshire Project SMART summer program, the Project SMART outreach program (CBNA, Londonderry High School and Timberlane High School) and Dr. Tony Phillips’ Earth to Sky Calculus program based in California had successful balloon launches on Saturday, November 23, 2015. The East Coast Project Smart and the Earth to Sky Calculus program have developed a cooperative venture to launch balloons simultaneously from the West and East coasts carrying payloads to measure difference in the radiation levels at the edge of the atmosphere between East and West. East Coast students and their advisors launched two balloons near New London, NH starting with the first release at 10:37 am on Saturday, November 23. The flights lasted about two hours reaching 102,000 feet – the edge of space.  CBNA’s team recovered the California team’s payload near Steep Falls, Maine on Saturday afternoon. CBNA also recovered its payload near Freeport, Maine on the afternoon of Sunday, November 24, caught high in a tree, making recovery difficult. The chase for recovery involved over 500 miles of driving throughout the weekend. This novel flight was commissioned by Dr. Peter Bloser from UNH for the purpose of flying a prototype scintillator that is being developed for use on spacecraft. The results from that part of mission are still being processed by the group from Londonderry High School.  The CBNA team did an outstanding job on the flight line. The camera bay design, release mechanism, and flight vehicle were CBNA’s primary responsibility. This flight resulted in some of the highest quality images of the edge of space obtained yet by a CBNA mission. Congratulations to all of these talented student scientists.

We invite you to watch the following video with captioned images and video clips that highlight the experience:

SAU #44 welcomes Katie LeClerc Greer to present Internet Safety and Digital Responsibility for Students in Grades 6-8 and 9-12: Understanding Your Digital Footprint

January 21, 2016

CBNA: 8:00-8:50
Strafford School (Gr. 6-8): 10:50-11:40
Nottingham School (Gr. 6-8): 9:20-10:10
Northwood School (Gr. 6-8):  1:35-2:20

The majority of kids in grades 6 and beyond have social networking accounts and are actively networking with others using various forms of technology (i.e. apps, messaging, etc.). At this stage, it’s imperative for them to know that there are consequences for their actions, as once they send, save or share, their information is out there – and stays out there – forever.   The following is an example of what is covered during this session:

  • What is personal information? What are privacy settings?
  • Social Networking including current trends
  • Interactive gaming rules and thoughts
  • Texting/smartphone usage including app trends, appropriateness and  tracking
  • Technology tattoos and creating a favorable, positive online brand
  • Cyberbullying

PARENTS/GUARDIANS:  We have included something special for you that you will not want to miss!  Join us at Nottingham School for a compelling, informational evening Parent Program  (*must be 18 years or older to attend)

January 21, 2016, 6:30pm-8:00pm

  • FREE RAFFLE PRIZE TICKET just for attending will be given to every parent at the evening event for a chance to win gift cards and technology related prizes!
  • FREE CHILDCARE will be provided that will include movies and crafts!
  • 6:00-6:30pm there will be coffee and snacks prior to the Parent Presentation!

Our kids are doing WHAT? What can I do to protect them? What apps should I be worried about? Is social networking safe? Is my child being cyberbullied? What’s texting? Sexting? What’s next? It’s often overwhelming being a parent today in our technology-driven society. Keeping up with the latest trends and dangers can often seem like an impossible task. Katie will help you navigate the digital waters and let you know what’s new, what’s now, and what’s next when it comes to your children and technology, and provides parents with proactive initiatives to keep kids safe.

Katie LeClerc Greer has been featured on Fox25 News Boston, the O’Reilly Factor and The Meredith Vieira Show. For more information on Katie LeClerc Greer and her presentation, visit http://www.klgreer.com.

CBNA FCCLA Press Release Image

CBNA FCCLA President Nicole Hodgdon; Sandy Priolo, of the Northwood Fire Dept. Santa’s Helpers; and Jolene Levesque, FCCLA Vice-President fill stockings for local community members during the holidays.

During the month of December Coe-Brown’s chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), was very busy trying to give everyone a little bit of holiday cheer. To start, senior Lexi Arsenault, took the initiative and put together a Parents’ Night Out. This event was very helpful for parents, especially during the holiday season but it was also a great chance for parents to take a relaxing night out together. Lexi and everyone in FCCLA want to thank Cowabunga’s in Hooksett for letting the children and the FCCLA members use the facility. The FCCLA chapter also wants to thank Hannaford’s in Northwood for the donations of snacks for this amazing event. This was a great night for everyone!

CBNA FCCLA members were also involved with Santa’s Helpers for the town of Northwood this year. FCCLA teamed up with the Northwood Fire Department to put together stockings for less fortunate children in the community. Thanks go to Northwood Hannaford’s and Meyer Dentistry for their amazing donations and for being so supportive to this community endeavor. CBNA FCCLA would also like to thank Mrs. Priolo for providing us the opportunity to help local families in need.

Finally, FCCLA would also like to thank anyone that gives a donation to any type of cause. The size of the donation doesn’t matter, but the impact you’ll have on someone’s life will matter! Our chapter believes in the importance of strong families and strives to help our school and community in various ways throughout the year, because together we will make a difference! Be sure to watch for upcoming events as we are planning another Parents’ Night Out at CBNA in February! Feel free to contact Mandy Morales, FCCLA advisor at amorales@coebrown.org for more information or any needs in the community.

CBNA to Offer College Credit for Entrepreneurship

$

Dr. JoAnn Zylak, a faculty member at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, has successfully completed the BizInnovator Teacher Certification and is now able to offer high school juniors and seniors University of Iowa college credit for completing the Entrepreneurship course, which can be transferred to other secondary educational institutions as necessary.

Developed by the Jacobson Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship at the University of Iowa, BizInnovator is a comprehensive online entrepreneurship curriculum that enables educators to teach the entrepreneurial mindset, encouraging creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and problem solving—and also to prepare students for success in their chosen career path.

This program is a key element in our initiative to promote Entrepreneurship to students at the local, state and national level. The University of Iowa tuition fee (over $1,000 value) has been waived and students simply pay a course fee of $150. The program is ideal for students who have a passion to pave new paths, create new things or solve problems. The Entrepreneurship course and Innovation software provides students with a framework to apply these interests to the world of business.

Local economies depend on an ongoing creation of successful new businesses. BizInnovator is a proven curriculum to provide our youth and young adults with the knowledge and confidence to be innovators for our community.

Another top priority is to boost student interest and achievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) will grow 17 percent by 2018—nearly double the growth for non-STEM fields. By 2018, the U.S. will have more than 1.2 million unfilled STEM jobs because there will not be enough qualified workers to fill them. STEM is where jobs are today and where the job growth will be in the future.

BizInnovator compliments the STEM initiative, giving students the know-how to take achievements in STEM to market.

For more information about BizInnovator, please visit www.bizinnovator.com. Students seeking information about registering for the next Entrepreneurship course at CBNA, should see their Guidance Counselors or email Dr. Zylak for more information at jzylak@coebrown.org.

CBNA Girls Basketball - end 68 Hours of Hunger

The CBNA Girls’ Basketball Program presents a check for $650 to Andrea McCusker, local representative for End 68 Hours of Hunger.

Recently, the Coe-Brown Northwood Academy girls’ basketball program sold calendars to raise money for its program. As part of the fundraising effort, they were also able to donate a portion of their proceeds to the local chapter of End 68 Hours of Hunger. As a result, the Lady Bears presented a check for $650 to Andrea McCusker who helps with the local chapter. End 68 Hours of Hunger is a private, not-for-profit, effort to confront the approximately 68 hours of hunger that some school children experience between the free lunch they receive in school on Friday afternoon and the free breakfast they receive in school on Monday morning. Locally, this organization helps to support 18 families in Northwood and surrounding towns with food for the times that students are not in school. CBNA Theatre to Present The Fantasists and The Tempest March 3, 4 & 5

Tempest Tshirt design finalCBNA Theatre will present two short plays, The Fantasists by Randy Wyatt and an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, on March 3, 4 and 5 at 7 pm in the Gerrish Gym on the Coe-Brown Northwood Academy campus. In the first selection, The Fantasists, two young wizard-storytellers compete to become Fantasists—honorable illusionists whose stories come to life. In the stories there is a prince, an evil ice queen, a formidable snow lion, a rambunctious sun wolf and the Gnome-Who-Lives-in-a-Lake-but-Doesn’t-Know-Why. But as perky Floriad and win-at-all-costs Somnia, forced to work together in their final test, see their tale (hilariously) fall apart, it will take every storytelling twist the acolytes know—and a few smuggled in from their mentors—to get through this ultimate battle of magic and storytelling. The cast includes seniors David Coe, Jessica Cooper; and Isaac Guzofski; juniors Arianna Jones and Andrew Leas; sophomores Sandra Black, Erin Boodey, Zachary Helm, Nina Laramee, Alex Mercedes, Cailinn Monahan, Julia Sommer and Courtney Snow; and freshmen Braelin Ash, Mackenzie Flanders, Olivia Roach, and Madison Rollins. The other selection, The Tempest, Shakespeare’s last play, combines elements of mystery, romance, intrigue, broad comedy, magic, and music. A usurped duke named Prospero and his now adolescent daughter have made an almost-abandoned island their home, along with a fairy named Ariel and a half-human slave, Caliban. Prospero uses magic to conjure a storm to bring his usurping brother and his cohorts to the island, with magical and fantastic results. Included in the cast of this selection are seniors Janais Axelrod, Damian May, Jared Neal, Emily Therrien, and Ryan Wadleigh; juniors Cassandra Barnhart, Lauren Burrows, Joseph Guptill, and Kelsey Wallace; sophomores Kayla Pollak, Alyssa Reiff and Allison Rose; and freshmen Brian Downer, Ian Gollihur and Cooper Leduke. The production is directed by faculty member Elizabeth Lent with assistance from faculty member Kolby Hume. Production stage manager is junior Kayla Cates. Reserved tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors and are available after February 29, by calling 942-5531 ext. 237, by email – elent@coebrown.org, or at the CBNA main office. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Paper Adventures: A Self-Portrait by CBNA senior Julie Souryavong a Scholastic Art and Writing Award national silver medal winner

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy is pleased to announce that senior Julie Souryavong from Northwood and freshman Brian Downer of Strafford were recognized in the 93rd annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.  Julie received a silver medal for her photograph entitled Paper Adventures: A Self-Portrait. This portrait was constructed by first capturing a beautiful sunset over a Goose Pond.  She then constructed paper boats and paper cranes.  Photographing each of these from the same perspective as the original sunset.  Finally she photographed herself in a confident pose and pull all the images seamlessly into one photograph.

Brian also received a silver medal for his essay entitled #PeaceforParis: Notes on the Realization of Personal Hypocrisy, which begins “If you have ever been afraid of yourself, perhaps you will understand. Not necessarily in a physical sense, not in the way that you’re afraid of beating yourself up, but in a different way. When you’re afraid of your own hypocrisy, afraid of your own prejudices, unsure of your own moral standings. You tell yourself you feel one way, and yet, with an increasing sense of dread, you notice yourself acting the other way on a daily basis…”

Sixteen members of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, along with their advisor Dr. JoAnn Zylak, attended the FBLA State Leadership Conference held on March 24 & 25 at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester, NH.  The students competed in five chapter competitions and 16 individual or team events.  Senior Brittany Guillemette won the Who’s Who in FBLA award and placed second in the team competition for Business Ethics along with Nicole Beaupre and Meghan Percy. These three students not only won medals for this competition, but also earned scholarships to SNHU.  In chapter competitions, the CBNA chapter won first place in the largest increase in membership for NH (attributed to Brittany and all past members for their recruitment efforts), an Honorary Chapter award for achieving points for various activities (attributed to all the officers and members), second place in the Go Green Officer Project (with special thanks to Megan Elwell, Tayla George, Ambar Mercedes, Alexander Mercedes, Amaya Newport, and Aiden Ahern), and the NH FBLA State Chairperson’s Award for participation in ALL state-wide projects throughout the school year which included Green Schools, Red Cross Blood Drive, Make A Wish, Revealing Invisible Illnesses, and Save the Animals programs, along with tab collection for David’s House and Walking for a Cure for Multiple Sclerosis.  Congratulations to all the members and officers.

So how can you help?  The CBNA FBLA Chapter is always looking for more connections with local businesses and seeking more professional memberships. Community members are asked to bring in their tabs (from tops of cans) which are recycled at the end of the school year with proceeds donated to David’s House.  You may drop off your collection of can tabs at the CBNA main office for our local FBLA chapter.  The chapter will be walking for MS in Manchester on April 17, as they have done for the past 18 years, and are looking for sponsors to help find a cure for this debilitating disease. Please forward all donations to Dr. Zylak at CBNA before April 15 and with everyone’s help, we can make this disease disappear!  Contact Dr. Zylak at CBNA for more information about these meaningful and charitable activities.
